Someone give me a pound – in money not weight please – for every time ‘getting fit’, or ‘losing weight’ is top of a New Year’s resolution list. Someone give me another pound for every time it’s not achieved! I’d be able to save Zimbabwe’s economy after a couple of years!
According to a UK government report, lack of physical activity is costing the UK an estimated £7.4 billion a year, including £0.9 billion to the NHS alone. What is it that stops so many people from achieving these goals? As a fitness instructor, I’ve heard several excuses – I mean reasons. Here are the 5 I hear most often.
I’m just so busy running around after the kids and doing all the housework, I barely have time to scratch my own ass.
I understand this, but if something is important to you, you will make time to do it! Start setting aside even 10 minutes a day for exercise, or incorporate exercise with other activities such as playing with the kids. Jump on the trampoline, skip, or do some gardening with them. Because let me tell you, if you don’t do any exercise or activity, you’re sure as hell going to have a bigger ass to scratch.
I really can’t afford to pay for gym membership every month. Especially whilst on Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP).
Granted, SMP is crap! But did you know that you don’t need to go to a gym to get exercise? Here are some alternatives:
• Join other women in your area and go for walks together. Especially if you’ve all got little ones in buggies.
• Look for local classes Pay-as-You-Go classes like Zumba, Clubbercise, Boxercise etc. These usually take place in a local Village Hall. There are also Buggy-fit classes and places like Busy Lizzy hold classes where you can go with your baby.
• Look for exercise videos online – you can find different types of workouts and chose the amount of time that suits you.
• Use Pay-As-You-Gym where you can buy single sessions at a nearby gym.
You’re probably the only one in the class thinking that. Everyone else will either be so busy getting into their workout, or thinking the same about themselves – hopefully the former and not the latter. Leave all your hang-ups at the door and get the most out of your workout. And don’t think that the instructor is having an internal fit of laughter at your moves, because the instructor is there to help you achieve your goals – not to laugh at you!
What do you say to your kids when they say ‘I can’t!’? Yes you can! You’ll not be the only person who’s gone on their own. After a while you’ll probably get to know some of the others in your class and who knows, you may even strike some friendships.
You can do exercise at home – there’s no need to go to a gym. Check out point number 2 above.
The one thing that drives all of these excuses – sorry reasons – is lack of motivation. We’ve got bags of excuses when we aren’t motivated to do something. Motivation is that force that says girl you know you’ve really, really got this!
Get yourself some motivation girl!
